Interested students with backgrounds in ecology, mathematics or biology should send inquiries to Dr. Adrian Burd (adrianb@uga.edu). Further information about this and other research projects in the lab can be found at http://www-modeling.marsci.uga.edu/eco_index.html

Spring/Fall 2009
Graduate Research Assistantship Available:

Position available for an M.S. or Ph.D. student interested in studying the dynamics of pico-phytoplankton and their protistan grazers in the Sargasso Sea.  Two years of funding available through an NSF grant; additional years may be funded through other grants and/or Teaching Assistantships.  Position to start Spring or Fall, 2009. For further information please contact Dr. Brian Binder (bbinder@uga.edu).
Spring/Fall 2009

Groundwater Meets the Ocean - Graduate Research Assistantship available:

Interested in the role of groundwater and the coastal ocean and the biogeochemistry of salt marshes? Support for M.Sc. or Ph.D. student is available to model the flow of groundwater at the GA coast and to study its role in the delivery and recycling of nutrients in salt marshes. Students with a background in natural sciences and interest in numerical modeling can find more information at  http://octopus.marsci.uga.edu/ (see link to groundwater site), and the broader context of the interdisciplinary work at the GA coast at http://gce-lter.marsci.uga.edu/  Contact: Dr. Christof Meile (cmeile@uga.edu)

Spring/Fall 2009

Bioturbation and Nutrient Fluxes - Graduate Research Assistantship available:

Funding for a M.Sc. or Ph.D. student is available to study the role and impact of macrofaunal communities on the exchange of nutrients between the ocean floor and the water column. In a joint project with Dr. George Waldbusser (Chesapeake Biological Lab), we will model experimental data and quantify species-interactions (http://octopus.marsci.uga.edu/research_nsfco.htm). Applicants should have a strong background in natural or engineering sciences and an interest in numerical modeling. For more information contact Dr. Christof Meile (cmeile@uga.edu, http://octopus.marsci.uga.edu/)

2009
Graduate Research Assistantship Available:

Dr. Patricia Yager has three recently NSF-funded research projects to investigate climate-sensitive carbon cycling, microbial ecology, and microbial community structure in the Amundsen Sea Polynya in Antarctica (during 2010-2011), the Amazon River plume (2010-2012), and the coastal Arctic (2010-2012). All three projects have graduate student support.  Students with at least B.Sc. degree (M.S. preferred) and a strong background in environmental sciences, microbiology, geochemistry,  and/or multivariate statistics are encouraged to apply. Field experience is desirable. For more information, contact Dr. Yager (pyager@uga.edu).  Graduate application materials should be submitted according to the directions found at: http://www.marsci.uga.edu/programs/grad_application.htm.
2009

GOHI Fellowship Available:

The Georgia Oceans and Human Health Initiative is a NOAA-funded research training grant that supports doctoral research at the interface of oceanography, public health, and climate change.  Up to three years of fellowship and research support is available for successful applicants.  For more information, contact Dr. Patricia Yager (pyager@uga.edu).

2009

Graduate Research Assistantship Available:

Opportunity available for MSc or PhD student to work on coastal physical oceanography. Research opportunities are broad, including the use of observations and numerical models to investigate coastal oceanography problems at several scales (inner shelf dynamics, large-scale shelf circulation, buoyant plumes, etc). Preferred applicants will have a strong background in physics and/or math. For further information please email marsdir@uga.edu.

Summer 2009

PhD Student Position in Coastal Biogeochemistry

A PhD student position is available to study the impact of changing salinity regimes on the biogeochemistry and microbiology of coastal sediments.  The project is part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research Project and begins in the summer of 2009.  The project involves a field manipulation of salinity at a previously freshwater site over four years. Key biological and chemical system components will be monitored during the salinity manipulation.  The selected student should have at least B.Sc. degree and a strong background in Environmental Sciences, Microbiology and/or Geochemistry.  Field experience is desirable.  For more information, contact Dr. Mandy Joye (mjoye@uga.edu; 706-542-5893) or see the Joye Lab website: http://www.marsci.uga.edu/FacultyPages/Joye/index.html.

Fall 2009

PhD Student Position in Deep Sea Microbial Biogeochemistry

Two PhD student positions are available to study the biogeochemistry and microbiology of seafloor brine habitats in the Gulf of Mexico as part of the Seafloor Brine Seep Microbial Observatory Project.  The project begins in the fall of 2009 and the first cruise is in the summer of 2010.  The project involves integrated studies of seafloor brine pools and mud volcanoes that occur along the continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico.  The project will provide opportunities for international student exchange in the laboratories of Dr. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs (Organic Geochemistry; Bremen, Germany) and Drs. Kirsten Habicht and Donald Canfield (Sulfur Biogeochemistry; Odense, Denmark).  The selected students should have at least B.Sc. degree and a strong background in Environmental Sciences, Microbiology and/or Geochemistry.  Field experience is desirable.  For more information, contact Dr. Mandy Joye (mjoye@uga.edu; 706-542-5893) or see the Joye Lab website: http://www.marsci.uga.edu/FacultyPages/Joye/index.html.

Fall 2009

PhD Student Position in Permafrost Methane Cycling

A PhD student position is available to study the methane production and dynamics in permafrost habitats along the Russian East Siberian Shelf. The project begins in spring 2010. Due to global warming, seafloor permafrost along the East Siberian Arctic Shelf is experiencing a pronounced change in thermal regime. Increased temperature affects permafrost in several ways, ultimately leading to its degradation and enhanced methane release. This project involves quantification of rates of biological methane production and consumption (oxidation) in permafrost and sediments at in situ and elevated temperatures. Natural abundance carbon and hydrogen isotope measurements will be used to quantify the age and source of methane collected from different sites and depths. Students with at least B.Sc. degree and a strong background in Environmental Sciences, Microbiology and/or Geochemistry are encouraged to apply. Field experience is desirable. For more information, contact Dr. Mandy Joye; (706-542-5893) or see the Joye Lab website: http://www.marsci.uga.edu/FacultyPages/Joye/index.html.
